The Jeweler’s Studio—Learn the Basics with Ashleigh Holeman

Tuesdays, November 29 – December 20, 6-9 pm

Gain the confidence to use the essential equipment needed to make amazing jewelry.  Let us introduce you to the jeweler’s shop and all its amenities.  We will answer your questions about what is what and teach you important safety practices.  Learn the safe and correct way to get yourself started in setting up your own studio. 

Part 1 - Hand tools:  Learn about tools including the jeweler’s saw, files, hammers, gravers, shears, and more.  Learn how to load saw blades properly and which tools you need to make jewelry. 

Part 2 - Flex Shaft:  Learn about the many attachments that can be used in the flex shaft (a rotary tool like the Dremel).  Gain dexterity and experiment with drilling, shaping, and creating unique finishes to your work. 

Part 3 - Torch:  Learn to use a jeweler’s torch to anneal, solder and develop heat patinas and textures in your metal.  Learn how to safely turn on and off the torch, discuss different gases used, different types of flames and their results.  Practice soldering and annealing metals.  Discuss metals and their properties. 

Part 4 - Techniques:  Learn about the many techniques of jewelry-making and discover which technique is right for the effect you want to produce.  Our teachers will show examples and demonstrate workshops offered at Creative Side as well as answer your questions.
